Students’ experience of HPIP

To give you a little impression of the HPIP community, here’s a photo of the master students and the coordinator of HPIP in February 2020. Below is a collection of the experiences of students who were part of the HPIP.

“HPIP requires each student to take responsibility for his or her own growth and personal and professional development. This is a great preparation for jobs after graduation. In my current PhD position, I get to explore all different kind of courses, research areas and develop additional skills. However, I need to ask for that proactively. Thanks to HPIP, I learnt to take responsibility to seize any opportunity that comes along. Now I see that this is a very valuable skill which I need to get the most out of my PhD position.”

“HPIP is an interesting and especially educational way to get more out of your study time on top of the normal curriculum. In particular, the extracurricular project is a great opportunity to find that extra bit of depth within a certain area of interest or discipline. I myself have learned more about setting up and conducting a systematic review within the subject of antibiotics. Thanks to HPIP I’ve been able to get more out of my master’s degree, while I had the freedom to determine myself in what manner I wanted to do this.”

“HPIP has opened doors form me from which I’m still reaping the benefits. I did my bachelor thesis on the feasibility of CRISPR as a medicine and I became interested in gene and cell therapies. It was HPIP who brought me in contact with the Netherlands society of gene and cell therapy (NVGCT), where I joined the website committee. I wrote pieces about registered gene and cell therapies, so I could gain knowledge about current gene and cell therapies. I enjoyed it so much that after obtaining my master’s degree, I’m still active at the committee and I’m not going to quit either! I meet so many smart and inspiring people that I can still develop myself as a pharmacist with advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) as a field of expertise. HPIP can give that extra boost to join in a new wonderful world of your choice!”

– Perry Schoor

“HPIP has delivered me many great things. For example, during my research project I worked on a new research protocol in collaboration with the Radboud Hospital, which included writing the additional documents for submission to the METC. The protocol was finally approved, which was a fulfilling experience. Another project that I carried out was the Glucantime project at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, where we looked at the safety of Glucantime in dogs with Leishmania. The opportunity to participate in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was very nice. It gave me the chance to conduct discussions with veterinarians, to look at consultations with patients (the dogs with Leishmania) and to collaborate with veterinary medicine students. In short, the HPIP gives students many extra options outside the regular course programme.”
